Play cricket with Cardiff Cavaliers

Want to play cricket in a fun and social environment, both in friendlies and competitions? If so, Cardiff Cavaliers would love to hear from you.

Through this website you should be able to find most (if not all) the info you need to join up with – and play cricket with – the Cavaliers …

… details about membership and touring

… fixtures, directions, maps and links to opposition websites

… details of the Club’s officers and its history

… club clothing

… scores, match reports, records and other stats

If there’s anything you can’t find, please contact us. If you’re a professional looking for a club then please save yourself the trouble of sending us your playing profile – you’d have to take your turn in selection for games and, perhaps most importantly for you, we charge you to play (not the other way round).

How it works

Team “mechanics”:  During the course of a season, we aim for everyone to have the same opportunity in terms of team selection, 12th man and reserve duties, collecting match fees, scoring, umpiring and managing the kit bag.

Availability

Selection is based on the information you input to MailChimp, our on-line database management tool, and can be updated by you whenever your availability changes. Approximately 3 days before a game, availability is reviewed, selections made and the team announced by email. Players are required to confirm their selection by the given deadline. Failure to do so will result in a reserve being given your place. The onus, therefore, is on you to manage your own availability information and confirm selection. We have around 50 fixtures per season and over 25 active players.  You can imagine the permutations and extra work involved if individuals had to be chased up so, simply, we don’t. If you want to be active and playing then it’s up to you to keep us informed. Click here for more details

12th man

We try to have a “12th man” for each match to help with important tasks such as ensuring the scoreboard is kept up-to-date, rotating the umpires when we are batting, ensuring the kit is all bagged up at the end of the game, and so on.  If another player is unable to start the game or becomes injured the 12th man takes their place. The 12th man is then given priority in selection for the forthcoming game(s). Over the course of the season, it is likely that everyone will do a stint. The 12th Man [PDF] has more details

Reserves

Changes to work commitments or domestic arrangements sometimes mean an original selection cannot then play.  We try to get three reserves who are available for the game but are not in the starting XI.  If listed as reserve, we ask you not to make other arrangements as we may call you up on matchday.  If you’re a reserve who doesn’t get a game, we will select you at the next available opportunity.

Kit bag

We are grateful to Michael Dawkins who looks after kit inspections pre and post season. However, during the season the bags need to be taken home by those who are playing in the next game. Again, we look to everyone to play their part in sharing this task around.
